As much as you and I love to travel, sometimes we just don’t have the money or time to make it happen. Ugh. So what is a travel-loving soul to do? Why a stay-cation of course. I was talking to my uber driver the other night and I mentioned this very idea- he looked at me like I three heads. So I thought to myself maybe I need to bring this idea to the people because it’s brilliant.
So what it a stay-cation? A mini vacation in your own backyard. Lets talk about why its awesome.

- No plane ticket needed. The average cost of a domestic flight is $379- that’s a lot of cha-ching that stays in your pocket.
- No rental car. Rental car costs vary based on many factors including the type of vehicle, the drivers age (watch out for those young driver fees!), and the airport you pick up the car at but you can expect to save at least $75 by skipping this expense.
- Stay-cations require little time investment. They are usually close to where you live and last no more then two days. The perfect weekend trip.
So lets explore what a stay-cation might look like in my own backyard… Saint Paul, MN.
Where to stay?
The Saint Paul Hotel – If you want to really live it up for the weekend and have a little extra cash from all that money you saved by taking the stay-cation route, this is the spot for you. It is in the middle of all the action that Saint Paul has to offer. Plentiful amenities and old world charm will set the stage for your perfect weekend. Rates start at $149. Check it out here: https://www.saintpaulhotel.com/
The Hotel 340– Just a couple blocks from the Saint Paul Hotel, the Hotel 340 is a hidden gem in the city offering an elegant setting in each of their unique guest rooms and more than enough amenities to keep you comfortable with rates starting at $109. Check it out here: https://www.hotel340.com
Where to eat? There are so many options in the thriving restaurant scene of of this little big city it can be overwhelming. Here’s a few suggestions.
Brunch Favorites (because this is a stay-cation and we are not getting up early for breakfast- also mimosas)

- Lowertown- Saint Dinette- enjoy your meal in a beautiful, light filled dining room while savoring fresh hot beignets followed by a delicious platter of lobster and grits. Prefer the classics? Don’t miss the egg benedict. This place fills up fast so be sure to make reservations: https://www.saintdinette.com/reservations/
- Downtown- The Buttered Tin- this is a can’t miss spot and even though it is still a bit of a hidden gem, you can expect a line to get in so get there (kinda) early. It is worth the wait- the menu offers a variety of delightful options including Banana Foster French Toast and Huevos Rancheros Benedict. Sound good? Find more info here: thebutteredtin.com/eats
- Grand Ave.- Okay for those of you need your mimosas (me!)- don’t worry I’ve got you. Come check out Dixies. For one it is a great place to start your day, as exploring Grand Ave. is one of the most popular activities in Saint Paul- more on that later. Dixies is all southern charm offering beautiful brunch buffet for $25.99 that comes with a complimentary mimosa- need a refill? Just $.75- yep that’s seventy-five cents. They take reservations as well: http://www.dixiesongrand.com/sunday-brunch/
Lunch and everything after
- Downtown- Meritage- This is one of my all time favorites spots in Saint Paul! Now I have to admit it may be because I am something of a francophile (I adore French culture)- but this place really has something for everyone. Featuring both a world class restaurant and an oyster bar with fresh oysters daily, alongside a wine list that will blow your mind- ask your server for pairing suggestions to enhance your experience. If the weathers right sit out on the patio where you can enjoy all the sights of Saint Paul while you are wined and dined.
- Downtown- Viex Carre- Okay this one is a bit hard to find, but that’s part of the fun right? Located in the lower level of the Hamm Building (same building as Meritage), this New Orleans style jazz club with speakeasy vibes will invite you in with its creole inspired seasonal menu and perfectly crafted cocktails and keep you there all evening with its swinging jazz and relaxing atmosphere.
What to do?
Tune in for part two and we will take a tour of some of Saint Paul’s greatest entertainment options!
